How the first African football club defeated Real Madrid
With the exception of the FIFA Club World Cup, which does not always ensure a matchup between African and European clubs, African football clubs rarely face off against their European counterparts in competition.
Playing in friendlies is another opportunity for clubs from both continents to compete against one another. A similar friendly game between two of the world’s most successful football clubs had place in the past.
Egyptian club Al Ahly stunned Spanish team Real Madrid on August 5, 2001, by winning 1-0 in a friendly match at the Cairo Stadium in Egypt. In their starting lineup, Real Madrid included elite athletes like Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, Raul, Ivan Helguera, Claude Makelele, and Roberto Carlos.
The Egyptian team defeated the Spanish giants thanks to a single goal from Nigerian player Sunday Chibuike.
