He was arrested in connection with the leak of dozens of highly classified documents containing an array of national security secrets, including the breadth of surveillance the United States is able to conduct on Russia.
According to reports; the classified documents included briefing slides mapping out Ukrainian vulnerabilities and military positions, as well as information on the circumstances where Vladimir Putin might use nuclear weapons.
Information about allies including Israel, South Korea, and Turkey was also included, in what is believed to be the most serious security breach since 700,000 documents, videos, and diplomatic cables appeared on WikiLeaks back in 2010.
The classified documents was shared on a chat group called “Thug Shaker Central”, which was formed on Discord during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Teixeira oversaw an online chat room made up mainly of male teenagers, with whom he had allegedly been sharing top-secret information for months.
It was not until intelligence material was posted outside the chat room group that Pentagon officials became aware of the leak, prompting a massive search for the culprit.
While Teixeira’s motive for sharing the documents is unclear, other members of that chat group have claimed he was driven by bravado more than ideology.
Jack Teixeira is set to be charged with removing or transmitting classified national defense information, which is a crime under the National Espionage Act.
He will appear in court on Friday, April 14 in Boston, Massachusetts
